Finance Analyst

As a Finance Analyst, you'll be able to work in a variety of roles and rotate across a number of different areas.

Broadly speaking your key responsibility will be to support the production and analysis of the bank's regulatory and financial accounts and reports, ensuring control of RBS's global reputation. Depending on which department you work in, you will also be involved in coordinating financial planning and providing oversight for the bank's board and management teams for overall financial performance. Aside from working on accounting and reporting, you may well be responsible for managing the funding and liquidity requirements of the firm, building strong relationships with external auditors, credit rating agencies, regulators and tax authorities.

Finance is divided into a number of different areas:

  • Product Control is aligned to a trading or structuring desk, you'll offer first line transactional support and produce the P&L (profit and loss) for each desk via the reconciliation to underlying product ledgers. Roles vary with involvement in various valuations, pricing models, regular P&L production with supporting commentary and reconciliations to specific models. Understanding the bank's and individual desk's positions on a daily basis are crucial to managing RBS's risk exposure in the market. Much of the work you do will be focused on improving the efficiency and accuracy of this process.
  • Regulatory Reporting manages the regulatory reporting on all transactions carried out by the different business lines in the firm. These reports are used to ensure internal and external regulatory policies and codes of practice are followed correctly. Where inaccuracy occurs it is your job to challenge and review the data to ensure that it reconciles.
  • Decision Support provide the analysis and reports used by the business to make strategic decisions. You will gain experience of the accounting control, performance management and planning that allows the Finance team to create a clear picture of current conditions and thet effect management decisions may have on the balance sheet.
  • Financial Control & Management Reporting is responsible for providing accurate management and financial information for specific business units. These figures feed into the Global Banking & Markets and RBS group accounts, allowing RBS to report on monthly, quarterly and yearly performance.
  • Financial Reporting works to record, report and control the financial transactions for RBS subsidiary companies. You will help to ensurethat all business transactions are accurately registered and meet the required compliance, legal, regulatory and supervisory requirements of industry body codes of practice.

As an analyst, you can expect to be given complete responsibility for achieving tasks early on during your time at RBS. We really believe in giving graduates the autonomy and responsibility to get things done so that they can learn as much as possible and gain responsibility early in their careers. Examples of what you can expect to get involved in during your time in Global Banking & Markets Finance include:

  • Supporting capital raising and the Interest Rate Risk Management teams
  • Promoting best practice in terms of financial regulations and approving complex transactions
